Art exhibition raises awareness for vulture conservation in Jorhat
JORHAT, October 1, 2026 — An art exhibition titled Colours of Vultures, aimed at raising awareness about vulture conservation, was organised by Aaranyak in collaboration with Universal Creative Point, Jorhat, at Gallery Vision Art, Asom, during September 26-27.
The exhibition brought together around 30 artists and featured more than 50 artworks highlighting vultures, nature, biodiversity and conservation. It brought artists, conservationists, educators, students, nature enthusiasts and members of the public together to explore the ecological importance of vultures.
The exhibition was coordinated by Wasima Begum of Aaranyak and Nayanika Borah, founder of Universal Creative Point. The initiative was conducted under the guidance of Aaranyak’s Senior Scientist, Secretary General and Executive Director, Dr Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, and Senior Conservation Biologist, Dr Dipankar Lahkar.
A special inaugural programme was held on September 26 in the presence of Dr Sangeeta Das, HoD, Department of Botany, Bahona College, Jorhat; Pranab Kumar Baruah, senior artist and retired professor, Assam Agricultural University; Bhupen Kumar Baruah, artist, social worker, science communicator and retired Assam Agricultural University official; Parikshit Baruah, artist and chairman, Vision Art Asom, Jorhat; and Hiren Dutta of Aaranyak. The programme was anchored by Darshana Barthakur.
The speakers highlighted the ecological importance of vultures as efficient scavengers and stressed the need for greater public awareness and community participation to address threats including harmful veterinary drugs, pesticides, poisoned carcasses and habitat changes.
Through diverse artistic expressions, the exhibition sought to move conservation communication beyond conventional platforms and use creativity as a tool for awareness, dialogue and action.
Participating artists were felicitated for their contribution. Diganta Baruah, editor of Junaki Mel Sishu Aluchoni and social worker, was also specially appreciated for his support in making the initiative successful.
The exhibition received an encouraging response from visitors, who interacted with artists and explored the conservation messages behind the artworks. The organisers acknowledged the support of Ashraf Ahmed, Jyotshna Bora, Nibedia Boruah, Chandramika Borah and Padum Dutta. Purabi Borgohain, curator and vice-chairman, Vision Art Asom, also attended the exhibition.
