Arrest of ADC demanded over payment of land revenue to Nagaland

The Golaghat district unit of All Assam Students Union today demanded arrest and suspension of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat Krishna Barua and Bhodo Chutia, the Gaon Bura (Village Head) of Gorbasti village of Merapani for their alleged role in paying a sum of Rs. 4400/- as land revenue to Chairman of Mikirang Village Council of Nagaland.

In a press meet held today, Monowar Hussain, central executive committee member of AASU alleged that the last year standoff between the Assam and Nagaland over the 250 Bighas of arable land of Gorbasti area of Merapani had been settled by paying land revenue to Nagaland administration and thereby accepting Nagaland’s dominion over the said plot of land. He also showed copy of the resolution of the meeting dated 22nd July between the Mikirang Village Council of Nagaland and Gaon Bura of Gorbasti held at the office of the Addl. Deputy Commissioner of Bhandari district whereby it was resolved that the farmers of the Gorbasti area shall have to pay the yearly Khazana (Land Revenue) within the month of April every year and the farmers who failed to pay the yearly Khazana within the stipulated time shall not be allowed to cultivate.

Hussain said that it was the result of the reckless behavior of the state government towards the border issue that a Gaon Bura with the help of the Addl. Deputy Commissioner Krishna Barua can dare to do such act. The state government is not at all serious about the border issue and that is why at the time when Nagaland has appointed four Border Magistrates for A, B, C and D sector, the Assam government has wrapped its responsibility by appointing only two Border Magistrates for the four sectors. The payment of Khazana to Bhandari district administration is just like handing over of land to Bangladesh by the government, Hussain said. The student body also threatened to intensify stir if actions were not taken against the ADC and the Gaon Bura.

On the other hand, Golaghat district administration denied the involvement of any of its officer in paying land revenue to the Nagaland Government. Juile Sonowal, Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat said that the administration already issued show cause notice to the Gaon Bura and demanded a reply within five days. As far as the cultivation in the Gorbasti area is concerned, which was stopped after criminals from Nagaland allegedly abducted, thrashed and later released seven villagers on August 8th, the district administration after consulation with the neutral force stationed in Merapani wil provide adequate security to them.

Meanwhile, the Golaghat district unit of Asom Gana Parishad burned the effigies of PWD Minister Ajanta Neog and Addl. Deputy Commissioner Krishna Barua for alleged payment of land revenue to the Nagaland Government.
