Journalism and anthropolgy have lots of similarities as both sectors demand field study.This was opined by eminent anthropolgist of the country Dr. Annadacharan Bhagawati while he was participating today in a monthly programme of the Guwahati press club called “Guest of the Month”. Expressing concern about trivilaity displayed by electronic media journalists in presentation of some news items he called upon them not to do so as it influences the young and minor mind to a great extent. “Electronic media should keep restraint”, he added. Dr. Bhagwati also stressed upon investigative journalism opining that it could bring out to light the actual fact of a happening and for this owener of a media house should provide financial assistence to its journalist to perform such task.Remembering past he said that he visited once the ‘Jone Beel’ festival.
Dr. Bhagwati is a social anthropolgist trained at the universities of Gauhati (B.Sc.Honours, 1956), Calcutta (M.Sc.1958) and Auckland (Ph.D.1967). He was Professor & Head of Department of Anthroplogy at Dibrugarh and Gauhati Universities at different periods.Dr.Bhagwati was recipent of Calcutta University’ Gold Medal for standing First in M.Sc in Anthropology and S.C. Mitra Silver Medal in Anthropology (1958). He also received Sanskriti Emeritus Fellow Lifetime Achievement Award (2001) of the North Eastern Institute of Culture and Religion, and R.P. Chanda Centenary Medal of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata (2012) for significant contributions in Anthropology.
