Assam Election 2011: Congress government and the new opposition

After the congress Tsunami in the 20011 election that left the political opposition horror-struck, now the million dollar question is about the functioning of the new government. Will the congress govern wisely? No Socrates and thus no philosopher kings, yet some feel that congress will do justice and corruption level will come down to some extent as because the congress has already looted for 10 years, on the other hand some feels, had the AGP came to power, corruption would have started right from the word “GO”. Million people with million minds will have various opinions, but in general people want a corruption free government and less burden of tax. However a taxi driver in Paltan Bazaar stand feels its time to pay more tax now even before the government had started functioning.

Will ANARCHY prevail? Congress spokesman Himanta Bishwa Sharma assures that anarchy will have no scope in the new tenure of the Congress government though there will be no opposition. He adds that the party will work more sincerely now for the development and that the various civil societies will act as opposition. He believes that the Assamese civil society is strong and vigilant enough to keep a check on the works of the Government. However taking the words of the minister for granted in face value will hardly serve any purpose. Yet it’s nice to hear these soothing words from the powerful minister who spoke very humbly each time we interviewed on the issue of opposition.

So how is the new opposition going to play its role in the days to come? Will protest on the streets get stronger or weaker without political opposition to raise relevant questions on the floor of the Assembly? Political parties have failed to get the Magic number, Just 21 out of 126 to sit in the opposition forget about the magic number to sit in power. Hope the civil doesn’t fail to raise voice on important issues. Specially people in the town and cities are always casual to join any protest on their own unless some one gives a push from behind or hijack his emotions. Its time for the people to come out to the street rather than trying to curse the politicians from their drawing rooms. Its time to get ready to brave the scorching sun and heavy rainfall. Hope the young bloods will not shy away from the new job, let’s all rock in true sense. After all for the general people, the opportunity of being in the opposition in real sense has come after a long gap of 64 years. All the good luck to the patriot and democratic people.

To say a fact, since 1970s, Assam never had a strong Opposition in the state assembly. The so called 'Opposition' are a pack waiting for their oppurtune moment to plunge neck-deep in corruption. The actual and best 'Opposition' force in Assam presently is the Independent Farmer Leader and RTI Activist Akhil Gogoi, and We the People.
