Supreme Court Issues Notice to Assam Government on PIL Seeking Probe into Encounter Killings
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken a significant step by issuing a notice in the Special Leave Petition (Crl) No. 7929/2023, directing it to the Assam Government regarding the PIL/86/2021. This petition was filed by advocate Arif Jwadder. Renowned lawyer and activist, Prashant Bhushan, represented the case in court today.
The PIL/86/2021 was originally filed in the Gauhati High Court, requesting an impartial investigation under the guidance of the high court into the alleged encounter killings occurring in Assam. However, the Gauhati High Court declined to order an independent probe into the alleged incidents of fake encounter killings involving the Assam Police. This development led to the filing of the Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court, seeking further review and action on the matter.

The bench gave the extension after the Centre and the state NRC coordinator agreed to publish it within the new 30 July deadline. NEW DELHI: BJP central leadership is understood to have cleared the decks for the Assam cabinet expansion at the end of an hour long meeting between Amit Shah and Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi on Friday.
