The Journalists' Forum, Assam has strongly condemned the killing of Jagjit Saikia, a Kokrajhar based scribe, who was associated with a vernacular Assamese daily, Amar Asom. The forum also demanded prompt and appropriate actions from Assam government to book the culprits for stringent punishments.
Meanwhile, The Journalists' Action Committee, Assam has decided to organize a protest meet on November 25 (Tuesday) at Guwahati Press Club. In a press statement, JAC revealed that Assam has lost 16 journalists since 1991, all of them were targeted by miscreants and banned armed groups.
Saikia, 30 was shot at by miscreants on Saturday noon in Kokrajhar town. He was taken to Rupnath Brahma hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. Saikia was also an office bearer of Assam Press Correspondents' Union. The APCU has already condemned the killing. Saikia leaves behind his wife and a daughter.
The Northeast witnessed another brutal killing of a scribe in Imphal on November 17. The unidentified assailants shot dead Konsam Rishikanta, a trainee sub-editor of The Imphal Free Press, an English daily from Manipur. The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union, Editors' Forum, Manipur had condemned the killing of Rishikanta, 22, and demanded actions against the culprits.
