SC slams RGI: Do NRC otherwise go?

NEW DELHI: In yet another embarrassment for the NDA Government at the Centre, the Supreme Court has asked the Registrar General not to halt the NRC process on the ground of panchayat polls.

Hearing an affidavit by the Centre on Tuesday, a division bench of the country’s apex court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RF Nariman strongly criticized the authorities saying that the panchayat poll procedure must not disrupt NRC process. They said if need be the government is free to hire officials from outside to conduct the polls.

They said if the RGI fails to do these he must quit the job but the entire process must complete within the time fixed earlier.
