Assam legislative assembly got underway in Dispur amid a story note on Monday. Opposition Congress and AIUDF did not allow governor Banwarilal Purohit to complete his speech to mark the start of the session which will end in March.
Uproar started as soon as the governor appreciated the Sarbananda Sonowal government for good governance and fight against corruption.
Congress and AIUDF members stood up and raised strong protest against the speech. They shouted that the state has never seen any sign of good and transparent governance. Price rise, law and order are still remaining a grave issue, said Congress legislators supported by AIUDF members. A section of the members from the treasury bench tried to counter the opposition members with utter noise. Amid a deafening din, governor Purohit concluded his 77 page speech halfway.
Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will table the annual finance budget on February 7.
As the House assembled in the morning Jorhat MLA Hiten Goswami filed nomination papers for the post of Speaker and was elected unanimously. Chief minister Sonowal, opposition leader Debobrata Saikia welcomed Goswami who hoped cooperation from all sides.
