A book titled “Smritir Surabhi” on life and works of social worker late Maheswari Devi was released at a ceremony at Kalaigaon on July 3 at 4 pm.The ceremony which was organized on the occasion of her first death anniversary was presided over by social worker Kami Ram Saharia.Floral tribute was paid to the image of late Maheswari Devi before inauguration of the book.Educationist Binoy Kumar Medhi of Tangla formally inaugurated the book in presence of a number of social workers,writters and woman of Tangla,Kalaigaon and Mangaldai.Speaking on the occasion Medhi recalled his association with late Maheswari Devi and her family prior to independence.He thanked the organizers for publishing the book in her memory which contains several of her write ups.The ceremony was also addressed by Nabin Chandra Boro,Inspector of Schools,Udalguri district.The book was edited by Abul Hussain,Sashi Prabha Devi and Akhil Ranjan Bhatta.Several distinguished people including social worker Mahendra Saikia,her daughter-in law retired secretary of Assam government Dinesh Bhattacharya and his singer wife Kanina Bhattachaya etc.were present on the inaugural ceremony.It needs mention that Maheswari Devi was born in 1934 on October 26 and was later married to late Kirti Prasad Sarma,Mouzadar of Kalaigaon.She had been the founder secretary of Kalaigaon Mahila Samiti which was established in 1956.She passed away on July 3 in 2015.Most of the family members of late Maheswari Devi were present at the ceremony.Her second son Kamal Prasad Sarma,Mouzadar of Kalaigaon offered the vote of thanks at the end.

In a very tragic and barbaric incident, Puspanjali Das (19)wife of Chandan Debnath of Thakuriapara village under Bhergaon sub-division in Udalguri district has been burnt down alive on Saturday noon for non-payment of marriage dowry. The incident has shocked the district. The lady was put in a sac before thrown in a fire lighted in a heap of hay. Puspanjali was married to Chandan just three months bac.
