Hundreds of Koch Rajbanshi students in Bongaigaon blocked the railway lines intensifying the demands for ST status at an earlier date which forces several trains to remain stranded for several hours on Monday.
Hundreds of students and local residents thronged the railway tracks in the morning and blocked the movement of trains from 6 in the morning.
Talking to Assam Times, they threaten to launch more agitation if the Centre fails to accord the status early. “We will resort to more intensified agitation if we are not accorded ST status. Let them do it and we will see them in the next Lok Sabha and assembly polls,” said a protestor.
Another protestor said,”We were waiting. But no we are running out of patients. If the Centre continues to remain silent we are ready for a massive agitation across the state.”
Koch Rajbandhis along with five other ethnic communities have been demanding ST status. The Centre has been studying the case and is expected to come into a conclusion.
