Guv sets up panel to study GU VC resignation

Assam Governor Lt General (Retd) Ajoy Singh has set up a panel to decide on Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Dr Amarjyoti Chaudhury's resignation he field last week. According to the Raj Bhawan sources the governor has suggested Dr Chaudhury to continue till May 29. Comprising several prominent educationists and intellectuals, the committee will submit the findings of the entire situation of the varsity.

Meanwhile, the governor has called education minister Ripun Bora on Thursday and sought to know the government stand. The minister reportedly informed the governor that the Assam Government is ready to accept the Chancellor's decision.

Social worker awarded at Sivasagar

Youth leader, president of Probah and General Secretary of Nazira Block Congress, Debobrata Saikia selected as the best social worker of Sivasagar district. He was awarded by Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar in the Independence Day Function at Sivasagar. Saikia engaged himself for socio-economic development of in the last several years.

Meghalaya, Assam to get spices parks

Assam and Meghalaya are set to get Spices Parks to promote value addition and help farmers by reducing their dependence on middlemen. According to information, feasibility study for the park in Meghalaya is under the process of preparation by the IIM-Shillong for which the report is awaiting. The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry will provide funding for the proposed Spices' Park. The Spices park will act as a common centre where farmers bring in their produces in bulks. Assam on the other hand, produces Bhut Jhalokia and mustard besides ginger and turmeric and is considered the gate to the North East. The region has also exported 37,38,597 MT tonne of spices, mainly fresh ginger and fresh turmeric, to neighbouring countries -- Bangladesh and Myanmar-- in the recent past, could further its export after the value addition is done and the quality is improved.

Upper House for Assam

The UPA government will introduce a Bill to create an Upper House in Assam Legislative Assembly during the Winter Session of Parliament.
The Assam government said the Union Minister for Law and Justice Kapil Sibal has told Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi about the decision to establish a Legislative Council (Upper House) in Assam Legislative Assembly.
Assam Assembly has passed two resolutions for creation of an Upper House in 2005 and 2010.
