Assam connection to SC judgment

A landmark judgment by the Supreme Court putting structure on the photographs of political leaders other than President, CJI and PM in government ads makes Assam proud.

But how the state is connected to this judgment? The Supreme Court judge who delivered the historic verdict was none other than Justice Ranjan Gogoi who hails from Assam.

The bench headed by Justice Gogoi rejected the plea of the central government that judiciary should not tread into the territory of policy decisions.

Justice Gogoi said that the use of photographs of political leaders in advertisements issued by the government and its agencies leads to a personality cult.

He further also asked the central government to constitute a three-member committee to regulate the issue of public advertisement. It did not allow a provision for special audit of award of government advertisement to media houses.

“We have reasons to feel happy as the brain behind the judgment is from Assam,” said Sashthi Das who is a lawyer by profession.

Another lawyer Ankita Tamuli told Assam Times that the judgment will change the mindset of the political clique to get publicity with the public exchequer. Its high time to change the system. 

The court on April 24 had set up the committee and decided to frame guidelines to prevent "misuse" of public funds by the government in giving ads in newspapers and television for political mileage.
