The world ‘immigrant’ created an uproar in the Assam Assembly forcing Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi to take prime minister’s name on Tuesday.
The uproar on the floor took place during the question hour when BPF MLA Pramila Rani Brahma alleged existence of immigrants in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts. But only to be objected by AIUDF MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed.
Brahma attributed many incidents to the encroachment by immigrants in BTAD areas. But Ahmed said that Hagrama Mohilary recently said there is no immigrant in BTAD.
Other AIUDF MLAs also backed Ahmed him and rose to their feet demanding that the Speaker expunge the phrase “immigrants" from the record of proceedings.
The Speaker rejected the demand. Other opposition parties AGP, BJP and BPF also backed Brahma saying there are illegal immigrants in Assam.
Ahmed rued that on the pretext of illegal immigrants issue, "one particular community has been tortured always".
Then the Speaker said, "When Modi came to Assam, he said lakhs of illegal immigrants were in Assam and all would have to leave bag and baggage after election. Now what action will you (AIUDF) take against him (Modi)?"
