Students demand completion four lanes

Students activists and publics staged two hour mass demonstration at Ramfalbil Rup Nath Brahma field along 31(C) National Highway expressing concern over the delaying construction of four lanes in national highways on Saturday in Kokrajhar.

The various student unions in Kokrajhar district including All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) and All Assam Gurkha Students’ Union (AAGSU)  jointly expressed irked over National Highway Authority of India (NHAI),which is soul responsible of constructing highways along 31(C ) National Highways in Kokrajhar district and Lower Assam.

The student unions demanded early completion of construction works of 30 kms from Kachugaon to Karigaon in Kokrajhar as it was supposed to  be completed by 2008, but it was delayed long.

Lawrence Islary,President of Kokrajhar district unit of ABSU said that it was targetted to complete construction works by December 2014 in delayed,but the construction work is now stopped since January of this 2014,where the constructed road is going to be damaged and the constructing bridge materials are going to damaged. He said the construction company raising security lapse in the area in the name of completion the works which is not acceptable for local publics,he added.

Nabajyoti Roy, General  Secretary of AASU and Lwtin Lokbok  president  Kokrajhar  district unit ARSU alleged that the national highway authorities  of India have totally failed  in constructing  the roads in due time. Although they pretended the extortions from various extremists groups in the region and delayed the construction works in its sustainity,they said.

According to the student union leaders the construction companies have neglected the Kokrajhar district while providing fourlane highways the gateway of north-east India connecting with the other parts of the country.

 The student unions also submitted a memorandum to Minister of Road and Transport Govt. of India New Delhi through Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar.   

It needs to be mentioned that the Gayatri Engineering Construction Company Limited (ECI) is delaying constructions four lanes National Highway 31 (C) works under AS-11 package, which had began from 2005 and it was supposed to be completed by 2008.

A businessman was hospitalized after attacked with sharp weapon by miscreants at Champa bazaar area on Friday evening in Kokrajhar district. An emergency response mock drill was conducted by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) at Habrubari in Kokrajhar district on Friday,which was a part of offsite emergency mock on the IOCL Guwahati-Siliguri underground pipeline to test the preparedness of its emergency personnel.
