NDFB-S militant arrested

Security forces seem to have stepped up operation to flush out insurgent elements from Guwahati in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Police and CRPF jawans held a NDFB-S militant during a search operation in the city on Friday.

The militant was captured at a sudden raid conducted at a hotel in Panbazar on Friday wee hours.

Police claimed to have seized a made in America pistol along with a magazine from his possession.

16 Child Scientists of Kamrup (Metro) Selected For NCSC 2010

Eight groups, each consisting 16 numbers of Child Scientists of Kamrup (Metro) district selected for the state level National Children’s Science Congress, 2010 to be held at Silchar on October 27-30. The name of the Child Scientists are : 1. Barnadhya Hazarika & Anuranan Kr. Kazi of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, 2. Abhinav Sankar Goswami & Madhurya P. Barman of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, 3. Pranat Kashyap & Trinayan Das of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, 4. Mrinal Kumar & Prachurya Mahanta of Axom Jatiya Bidyalaya, 5. Suryakamal Sarma & Manabendra Das of Axom Jatiya Bidyalaya, 6. Papari Choudhury & Himashmita Kakati of North Guwahati Girls High School, 7. Nupur Choudhury & Siddharth Roy of KK Memorial English High School and 8. Dhanmani Deka & Kaushik Talukdar of New Guwahati Adarsha Vidyalaya, They have completed science projects related to scientific use of land. The titles of the projects are: Scientific use of land: A case study of Athgaon Kabarsthan, Improvisation of a barren piece of land through detection of minerals deficient in it, Community knowledge of land use in folklore, Decaying Power of various soils. Effects of components on temperature of soil. Use of soil for making statues. Deepar Beel and its water quality and Comparison of land-use & standard of life of Sivanagar and Bhaskarnagar respectively.

Firing between police and poachers; one killed and five arrested

A poacher was killed by the police at Kanchanjuri near Kaziranga National Park in the night of 23rd July. According to sources during the course of regular checking of vehicles by Bagori Police Station, a Tata Sumo bearing registration No. AS-06/E-5082 did not pay any heed to police signal to stop and speeded away. The poachers deserted the vehicle at Kanchanjuri and tried to escape towards Kaziranga National Park and started firing at the police team who were following them. In retaliation police also fired at them killing one of the poachers named Piku Ali and injuring one Bashar Ali. The police arrested five persons from the spot. Police also recovered a pipe gun from the poachers.

Six teams in N E Challenge Cup Hockey

Manipur will take on Nagaland in the inaugural match of the First N E Challenge Cup Hockey Tournament which will begin at the Md Tayabulla Hockey Stadium at Vetapara, in the city, on Sunday. Altogether six North eastern states will take part in the Championship.

The secretary of the Assam Hockey Association Tapan Das said that, six participating teams had been divided into two separate groups. Top two sides of the each group would qualify for the semi finals. It may be mentioned here that both the semi finals will be held on October nine while the final is slated on October 10.

As per the schedule host Assam had been placed in group ‘A’ along with Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. Assam will play their first match on the inaugural day against Tripura. On the other hand title contender Manipur is in group ‘B’ along with Mizoram and Nagaland. Das added that matches would be held in both morning and afternoon sessions

The fixture of the meet: October 7: Manipur vs Nagaland and Assam vs Tripura, October 8: Assam vs Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram vs Manipur, October 9: Tripura vs Arunachal Pradesh , Mizoram vs Nagaland and two semi finals. October 10: final.
