Umesh Roy (14), son of Sivsaran Roy, was found dead on September 20 at Namrup. The reason of the death was believed to be regular consumption of gutkha (sikhar). According to his parents, he goes to school as well as works in a shop to support the family. Sometimes he suffered stomach pain and on September 20 he was vomiting and died on the way to hospital. According to local people who are close to Umesh, he use to consume an average of 20 packets of sikhar daily. The post mortem report said stomach ulcer and bleeding.
Namrup: Many women entrepreneurs in Namrup claimed to have been benefitted as they attended an income generating workshop which concluded on Friday. Talking to www.assamtimes.org Institution of EngineersIndia-Upper Assam Local centre who organized it said the skill development workshop evoked huge response in Namrup.
The workshop imparted training on cutting, tailoring and fashion designing held under the Namrup Town Committee under Chairmanship of Neetu Sonowal Buragohain. Chandrama Baruah noted Northeast fashion designer said, "through this skill development workshop on tailoring every women skills are produced in a new way with their self repect earning ." Rima Rabha, a participator "It is very encouraging for me and this will help us in financially."

The Asom Gana Paroshad on Monday has announced the full list of its candidates fielding former minister Gunin Hazarika from Kaliabor and Sabda Rabha from Kokrajhar for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.
The announcement was made at a press conference in Guwahati on Monday where Bhupen Rai's name was announced as the candidate for Barpeta. The party has fielded tea tribe leader Joseph Toppo from Tezpur contrary to the speculation of fielding Padma Hazarika.
The party has earlier announced Sarbananda Sonowal as candidate for Dibrugarh and Dr Arun Sarma from Lakhimpur. The party has decided to field only six candidates only this time because of the poll alliance with BJP.
