Women experts from the north east will rub shoulders in Guwahati on August 22 to discuss in detail the peace and conflict in the region which has already took a heavy toll over the last couple of years.
Jointly organized by the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network, Control Arms Foundation of India & Northeast India Women Initiative for Peace, the conclave will share the information on the conflict-related incidents to be deliberated in detail.
Many experts have already confirmed their participation in the conclave in Guwahati Press Club.
According to Binalakshmi Nepram, the region that borders five countries and comprises the eight beautiful states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim.
She said over 72 armed groups operate here and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act is in the region since 1958. More than three lakh troops deployed in the region thus become one of the most highly militarized and conflict zones of the country and world. Over 20,000 women are widowed in Manipur alone and 500 child soldiers recorded in the conflict zone.
